The first book of the brilliant fiction series 'A Song of Ice
and Fire', A Game of Thrones happens to be a majestic, jaw-dropping writing of
George R.R. Martin. The first part of the seven books, five volumes in total,
covers the introduction of the ruling Houses of Westeros, the land where the
'game' comes into play.
The story begins with the slight hint of the Whitewalkers, commonly known as the Others, along with the Wildlings north of the Wall. Martin has managed to keep the description pretty vivid, and the reader can actually feel like witnessing every event of the fiction. The characters haven't been completely touched, and that's what creates a layer on their respective personalities. Martin has slid the history of most of the characters very smoothly in the book, without looking for a particular climax.
This work of fiction seconds the fact that books definitely are better than their TV and movie adaptations. For sure HBO and the 'Game of Thrones' team have been doing an excellent job for past years, bringing Westeros and the Free Cities to life on our televisions, George R.R. Martin's writing happens to cover even the slightest of character details and happenings around them. This is the case of every TV series/movie being adapted from a book, and by far the G.O.T. team has done a remarkable job.
There are a few surprises though for the ones who have watched the HBO series but haven't laid their hands on the book yet. Like most of the adaptations, slight changes have been made in the TV show, the major one being the ages of the main characters. The Stark family is pretty younger in the book. For instance, half-brothers Jon Snow and Robb Stark are both aged 14 when Jon leaves for the Night's Watch and Robb rebels against King Joffrey, respectively. The two, including their siblings and other leading characters from other parts of Westeros, are younger in the book as well. Daenerys too happens to be a 14-year-old teen during her marriage to Khal Drogo, whereas Emilia Clarke plays a Dragon born who's pretty much an adult.
The book succeeds in giving the reader goosebumps on a regular interval, leaving the reader awestruck with the sheer vividness and brilliance of the writer to bind so many individual stories altogether without making the readers scratch their heads in confusion. Once you've started reading the first book, you just can't live in peace unless you finish reading the entire series!
I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.
