Mohit Uppal's debut novel Here Be Dragons is the tale of three friends who go on a thrilling adventure in the beautiful country of Italy. Koren mafias, carnival of Venice and tons of bloodshed is all rolled up together in this absolute pageturner.
The story begins with a slightly depressed Ayaan Kehal, an Indian guy who has left his job, sort of broken-up with his ladylove and is on a Euro trip to find answers to the questions haunting his mind. He is surprisingly joined by his college mates Aiden Vanderwolf and Kwan-Hoon Lee at the Rome airport. Aiden, a rich American brat along with South Korean ex-soldier Kwan have been looking for the latter's long lost love, Su Jin, a Korean prostitute.
The novel doesn't lose its pace at any point. The author has crafted the mystery very well and presents jaw-dropping twists at proper gaps. The plot is well-defined and the bonding between the three men from different nationalities gives friendship goals.
In particular, the description of training camps of Korean soldiers was one of the best written part of the thriller novel. The graphical description in some parts does creep the reader out and thus reflects the brilliance of the author's imagination. Along with the dark mystery of the adventure, the description of the cities of Rome and Venice (particularly) will rise the desire to visit the cities as soon as possible in the reader's mind.
This thrilling 280 pages book manages well to pop up the same question in the reader's mind with every turning page, "What next?" Here Be Dragons will remind you of all the light chuckles and roasting of your buddies and will take you back to the college days. The three musketeers will take you back in time for sure.
The best part, this book will give you some serious vocabulary goals. Take a bow, Mohit. You're awesome at the vocab game!
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
